Judy Garland Biography

Judy GarlandJudy Garland, born Frances Ethel Gumm on June ten, 1922, in Grand Falls , Minnesota, started her show business career before she was 3 years in age. By age 6 she used to be a vet performer, appearing with her 2 older sisters in a vaudeville act. Erroneously promoted as “The Dispirited Sisters” in 1931, the sisters at the recommendation of a fellow performer modified their stage name to Garland ( the name of a then-prominent drama critic ).

Right after that, at her very own demand, she modified her first name from Frances to Judy ( after a well-liked song of the day ). In 1935 the head of MGM ( Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ) was prompted to hear her sing. Enthused, he signed her to a contract.

 

There had been some doubt at the studio on the best way to make use of her gifts. A year passed before she made her first MGM f1lm, a 2 reeler. Her first appearance in a feature didn’t come till 1937, when she was lent to 20th Century-Fox.

 

That very same year at an MGM party for its star Clark Gable she used to be a hit singing a speciality number, “Dear Mr. Gable” changed from the well known standard “You Made Me Love You.” As a consequence she and the track were combined into the 1937 feature Broadway Tune of 1938. Again she earned accolades. MGM quickly put Garland into more, each highlighting her in song. In her next – Thoroughbreds Don’t Cry ( 1937 ) – she was cast with Mickey Rooney, with whom she afterwards appeared in 8 f1lms.
